What's a Healthy Weight Loss Goal for You?

    Last updated 6 months ago

If you have ever achieved something difficult or stuck with something challenging, you know that setting a goal can help you stay motivated and on track. The same is true when it comes to weight loss. But because every person has a different body type and composition, a healthy weight loss goal may not look the same for everyone. Talk to your weight loss program about personalizing a weight loss program and goal that works for your needs and is healthy for you.

    Considering Your Body Composition

When you step onto the scale at Valley Medical Weight Control, we understand that the number doesn’t always tell the whole story. Your body’s composition is what really determines if your weight is healthy or not. In determining a healthy weight loss goal for you, we consider factors such as your percentage of body fat, water retention, muscle mass, and more. These measurements provide a more complete picture of your weight and health. A high number on the scale could be associated with more muscle mass or excess water retention rather than fat, which impacts the weight loss goal you should have.

As a medical weight loss center, Valley Medical is able to identify underlying conditions that could be impacting your weight. For instance, water retention can be a sign of menopause or thyroid disease, two major weight-gain culprits.

    BodyComp Scale

The BodyComp scale is Valley Medical Weight Control’s tool for determining your unique body composition. This scale is similar to the scales used by professional athletes to track their weights. It provides measurements of your total body weight, fat mass, fat free mass, body water, resting energy expenditure (metabolism), and more. All of our patients have access to full body composition reports for a minimal cost to guide them in their weight loss plans.

    Eating Healthy When Dining Out

We can’t deny that food brings people together. Going out for a meal can be a wonderful opportunity to spend time with loved ones and enjoy a night on the town. But why is it that these happy occasions sometimes leave us feeling uncomfortable and guilty the next day? Dining out can lead to overeating or the making of unhealthy choices. With many restaurants' serving sizes twice as large as the recommended size, it suddenly becomes much easier to eat more than you even intended!

Going out to eat can be an important part of a healthy social life, so instead of avoiding eating out altogether, equip yourself with some tips on making healthy restaurant choices. In the video below, learn more about controlling portions, selecting healthy menu items, and enjoying your restaurant experience even as you stick to your diet and weight loss goals.

    Understanding Your Metabolic System

    Last updated 7 months ago

You may hear about the benefits of boosting your metabolism for weight loss, but what does that mean and how does your metabolism relate to your weight? Your metabolic system plays an important role in how your body processes food, which in turn can have an effect on your weight. Understanding your body’s metabolism can help you tailor a diet, exercise and supplement plan to help you reach your weight loss goals.

    Biochemical Changes

Consisting of a series of biochemical changes, your metabolic system can be subdivided into two types of metabolism. Catabolism describes the chemical reactions that take large molecules and breaks them down into smaller molecules; when these molecules are broken down, energy for the body is created. Anabolism, on the other hand, is a chemical reaction by which smaller molecules are combined into larger units. These newly formed chemical bonds store energy.

    Metabolic Rate

Your metabolic rate is the amount of energy you create per unit of time. Several factors can affect your metabolic rate, including how recently you’ve eaten, the frequency and intensity of your physical activity, hormone levels and your current mental state.

Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the minimum number of calories your body needs to sustain your life through breathing, repairing and creating cells, circulating blood, and adjusting hormone levels. The majority of the calories you burn throughout the day and night are used to support the basic functions of your body. Factors that affect your BMR include:

    • Age
    • Gender
    • Diet
    • Exercise
    • Percentage of body fat
    • Body temperature
    • Genetics

    Metabolism and Weight Loss

For some individuals with a slow metabolic rate, weight loss can be a constant challenge. To help you boost your metabolism, ask your weight loss program about medications and supplements that can kick-start your metabolism. A faster metabolism means your body is more efficient at turning foods, fats and other molecules into fuel for your body.
